Those of you who know us pretty well will remember we did this back in 2009...headed up the east coast to Maine and back down through the mountains ending up at Woodstock, NY. Didn't get a chance to go last year but we're off again! This time back to the east coast but heading south to Myrtle Beach via the Outer Banks.
We left Ohio on Friday late afternoon to head for the Wheeling Island Casino and dog track. A good friend suggested we try the dog races...she was right...how fun! Love to learn something new every day and that day I learned to place a bet electronically and how to read a little of the racing sheets...still have a lot more to learn! We did win about 50.00...of course the slot machines ate it before we left! Spent the night "boondocking" in their parking lot. Snug and Cozy. For those of you who might not know...we take all the seats out of the back of our mini van and turn it into a "camping van".
Teeth brushed and face washed at Burger King...a cup of coffee in hand and off we headed for Cumberland MD via Old St. Rt. 40 (National Road/Pike). So pretty driving through the hills, stopping here and there to dig through a junk shop or garage sale. Arrived in Cumberland around 2...wow...what a surprise. Beautiful old city with a National Park in the center. Wasn't expecting all of that. Our reason for stopping was to tour the Gordon/Roberts House...a restored Mansion that serves tea to begin the tour. We love touring old homes and hearing about the families that live there. We weren't disappointed. AND...we had tea and the guide to ourselves:) She suggested we walk up the hill to see all the old homes on Washington St. So we did. A big hill...good exercise...beautiful blue sky autumn day and tons of restored old mansions and homes to look at. One home had a Halloween Party going on in the back yard with Princesses, Pirates and other spooky creatures:)
Headed out to Rocky Gap State Park to find our camp spot...we've learned from the past that trying to find a camp spot in the dark is not easy! Found a spot close to the Bath House for us old folks and then headed back to town to eat. Found the "Crabby Pig"...a seafood and BBQ spot right next to the National Park on the Canal. Dave tried their Blue Moon Pumpkin Ale and I had some wonderful cream of crab soup...the house specialty! Back to camp for a hot shower in the nice warm bath house and then tucked into the Van with computers and books for restful night.
Today we are headed for Baltimore....after we finish playing on our puters at McD's! "(thanks McDonalds for the free WIFI!).
