The weatherman is predicting 4-6 inches of snow on Sunday evening! It was sunny and 40's today so we decided to get out of Dodge and go where the wind blew us:) First stop, Frisch's in Heath for breakfast! Next stop was a drop off at Finders Keepers Village in Heath. A phone call the night before told us to get there early to restock!! LOVE those kind of messages:) Someone posted on Facebook a while ago that there's a new flea market, in the little strip mall beside Toys R US, in Heath. So we decided to have a look...fun place to find everything from guns to clothes. Right beside the flea market is a new pre owned furniture store called Options. Great price on this dresser/sideboard/buffet. 52.00! Not sure it will last long at that price. One of the vendors at Finders was having a tag sale on Saturday at a local warehouse. She called it, "Poor Girls with Great Junk Tag Sale":) Scored when I found this scrabble game...having a hard time finding the games to keep my Scrabble tiles in stock at Finders Keepers! We dropped new tiles off on Saturday and now I have another set to drop off this week:) Someone mentioned this Antique and Flea Market off of Hudson Ave in Newark, so we popped in to have a look. Look at this Bassett Dresser one booth had for only 34.00!!! If we had room in our space at Finders I would have nabbed it. They are open 7 days a week from 10-5. Would made a great buffet or sideboard too. I have a vision of it painted white and distressed. I've never saw a chair like this one we found at "Pass It On Ohio" thrift store in Utica. The tag said it was a fishing chair. I wondered if it was used as a picnic chair back in the day? Top folded down. Leather straps were adjustable and a little pocket under the seat to store a blanket or such. Adorable. I had to pass this one up but thinking $95.00 for this one of a kind chair was probably a great price. While we were restocking our booth at Finders in the morning, I ran into a very nice lady who shared that her family owned the Ben Franklin in Utica. We talked about struggling small businesses and that at one time her family owned 6 of these stores around Ohio ran by her parents and siblings. The Utica store is the last one still in the family. As we were talking she picked up one of our vintage hankies and said, "we have these 2/.99 at the store!". So that's how we ended up in Utica. How fun to walk around this old store. So many items in one place. I bought a grease marking pen (haven't used one since I worked in a drug store 38 years ago), 2 children's hankies with farm animals (2/.99 just like she said:), a "For Sale" sign for our Astro Van, a Chalk Marker to use on the van windows and had to talk myself out of a package of Mallow Cups (a great gooey candy bar from my youth). The "Ben Franklin" lady also told me about a cute shop she had just visited in Mount Vernon called "At the Primitive Cellar". Unfortunately, when we arrived they had already closed for the day so we only got to peek in the windows. Cute store that I'm putting on our "to visit" list. They have a FaceBook page if you want to take a virtual tour. Mount Vernon has a wonderful thriving downtown with a book store, restaurants, antique and gift stores...thinking it would be a great place to have a girls day out. Last stop was Southside Diner for a dish of this Greek Banana Salad! It's one of those dishes that you think, "ewwww" the first time you taste it...but trust me, you'll be thinking about another taste a week later. Bananas, peanut butter and sweet sour like dressing served on a bed of lettuce. Sounds terrible doesn't it? You'll have to trust me on this one till you make it there for a taste of your own.

Today was one of those special warm and sunny January days that make you want to be out and about...so we dubbed it "date day" and out we headed. East or West? Lancaster or Cambridge? Donald's Donuts or Bob Evans for breakfast? LOL...those were the biggest decision on the morning:) and this is where we went for breakfast:) If you've never had a fresh from the fryer DONALD'S DONUT...you've been missing the BEST donut ever! Don't get me wrong...we love Krispy Kremes...but these hometown donuts have them beat! Here's a link to their Facebook page so you can get the scoop and make plans to go: https://www.facebook.com/DonaldsDonuts Before we left Zanesville we decided to make a trip to Wyers on SR 60 South, just on the edge of town. We've driven past often but never made time to stop. If you're looking for a pretty painted wash stand...they have one inside for just $75.00. Wish I had remembered to take a picture...been thinking about that sweet stand all day:) Adding this link to their Facebook page in case you need contact info: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Wyers-Antiques-Collectibles/165496516809480 At this point we decided to head east on old Route 40...towards Cambridge OH, with Theo's on Main Street our final destination. First stop was Casa Bella Antiques near White Pillars. Spotted this retro mid century metal cabinet (maybe used in a hospital setting?) in the BARGAIN BASEMENT...just 48.00 and another HALF OFF! Not something we can use right now...but a great deal for someone else. Only link I could find to share is this one...not the best but a start if you are interested in having a look: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Casa-Bella-Ornamental-Iron/158826047481221 Next stop was the Norwich Flea Market (okay...that's a little white lie...we stopped at another shop but I forgot to get a picture! I think it was called, "Just Stuff". Delightful owner who helped us decide on 5 great pieces of small furniture!) AND THEN the next stop was the Norwich Flea Market:) Lots of vendors running big sales.... Pretty much finished filling the van at the flea market:) That made our day...especially since we started out with an empty van! Next stop was Whispering Willow Primitives. Don't you love her sign and the way she used the mantle on the front of her building? Inside are the cutest painted pieces. Lots of character and shading...a real labor of love...and yep...I forgot to get a picture inside but here's a link to their Facebook page where she's posted pics of her painted furniture:) https://www.facebook.com/pages/Whispering-Willow-Primitives-Resale/330648413658338 Last stop of the day...THEO'S on Main Street where Dave ordered the Hand Dipped Fried Mushrooms as recommended by our friend at Whispering Willow Primitives:) The portions are very generous and the prices are great. Well worth a trip. So wanted to end with a piece of their well known pie...but just didn't have room:) Link to their website so you can read their "story" and see the daily specials: http://www.theosrestaurant.us/ Still had time to make it home for a little nap before heading to our favorite Saturday Night Auction:) All and all a fun and productive day.
P.S. If you have any favorite places be sure to post them in the comments...we love hearing of new places to explore! We couldn't decide...Country Living Fair or Springfield Extravaganza and the Vintage Market Place? A phone call from the grands made the decision for us! Springfield is halfway between Dresden and Indianapolis...who could resist a day out with their beautiful grandchildren? Catie Lynn and Miss Caroline helping me get a pic of this super sweet dress form wearing a paper skirt made from book pages. "Tag, you're it!" Grandson Cannon (blue shirt) found his own way to have some good old vintage fun at the market:) An old playground and some new friends are a great way to spend some down time... One of the most eye catching displays in the market...love the look of the orange with all the metal. Can't see in this pic...but the entire display was sitting on an industrial cart with orange handles. One of the best "beds made into a bench" I've ever saw! Attention to detail on this piece was amazing. What perfect way to display old frames! Don't these look yummy? LOL...they're bits and pieces of old lace wrapped around vintage clothespins...adorable! The "RELOVED" booth had some amazing displays...most in shades of gray. Dave pointed out this unusual mirror turned information board. Cork board and chalk board... Seeing this adorable paint job made me sad that I sold my old rusty yard bike this summer:( It would have been perfect to paint up... Amazing collection of head vases...made such a statement grouped together on the distressed dresser. Jackie spotted this and took me back to see it...thought it was really original. A fun day for all of us...including the littlest grandbaby "Claire" who just attended her first market and doesn't even know it yet:)!! LOL...she's due to make her debut in mid November.
It was a sad day when we had to close the Dresden JUNK-Shun outside "honor system" 24 hour shopping. Over the years we've been blessed with so many wonderful, honest customers. Coming home from a vacation to find our slot in the door stuffed with envelopes from outside shoppers always made us feel so good! And our customers loved the chance to "pick" through the junk for treasures to repurpose and renew anytime they felt like it. But last Saturday we discovered we had been "hit" by thieves again...this time taking some old primitive tables and crocks that I'd been "weathering" and waiting to take to our booths. Everything was clearly marked with a price but someone thought it was okay to out 1.00 in the slot and take off with nearly 100.00 worth of stuff:( It isn't the first time we've experienced theft...but each time it happens, it makes us angrier! And then we spend the rest of the day thinking about it, dealing with it and talking about it....to the point that it will ruin a perfectly good day. This particular day we were looking forward to going to Bloom Field to a flea market we'd heard about...but after this...we never made it:( Tired of the dishonest people in this world ruining our day...so the decision was made to "close it down". So we are in the process of working the good stuff into current booths, clearing out the damaged stuff for the trash man and will no longer be buying items with an eye for offering and displaying them in our "outside area". So sad because it was a part of our job that we both enjoyed... Of course we'll continue to stock our booths with lots of auction goodies so be sure to watch our website and facebook page for updates and new products. You'll find links to all 5 of them on our home page. and THANK YOU |
